WE HAVE COMPLETED ALL OF PHASE 1!

  • In early 2023, a small group of concerned citizens met to discuss the preservation of the cemetery.

  • As the “Friends of Caribou Cemetery,” we then began to raise funds under the auspices of the Nederland Area Historical Society. We continue to do so, and our donations are TAX-DEDUCTIBLE. Thank you.

  • We assembled and researched all available cemetery-related photos and documents. These included photos from the Carnegie Library in Boulder, the Western History collection at Denver Public Library, the Nederland Area Historical Society, and additional information from families and friends on the website FindAGrave.

  • We began to engage the community in outreach, with presentations at the Denver Mining Club and the Mining History Association. We are available…. just ask.

  • We began budgeting and planning for fencing and interpretive signs. We currently are mapping the known gravesites.

  • On Sunday August 13, 2023 we assembled a crew of more than 40 people who cut up, cleaned up, and chipped a huge amount of previously cut and downed trees and slash. Some in the group also trimmed and clipped around individual graves to make them more visible in the upcoming mapping process.

Photo below in June 2020. Photo below, right, on August 13, 2023. Finally it's looking like a cemetery again. (The mountain view is the same, but it was obstructed by clouds at the time of the 2023 photo.)

AUGUST 13, 2023 WORK DAY

As one of our hard-working volunteers stated afterwards, "My whole family was moved, exhilarated, and touched by seeing so many people giving their time and energy. I’m looking forward to getting together in the near future to talk with you about continuing to do work to honor those resting up there. My heart was filled with joy to be able to lay flowers on Tom [Hendricks'] resting place. I hope I can return when the clouds lift and see the view from that spot."

Below, August 17 and October 12, 2023 editions of the Mountain-Ear. Special thanks for covering our event.
